Plumbing Emergency Questions, Answered Plainly

FAQ

What people ask us

Is a clogged drain really an emergency?

Sometimes. Say one bathroom sink drains slowly. That can usually wait for a scheduled visit. Now say the shower gurgles and the toilet bubbles when the washer runs. That points to a blockage in the main line, and wastewater can rise into the house. Stop using water and request an estimate. A provider in our network can help you judge how urgent it is.

What should I do first if a pipe bursts or water is pouring out?

Find the main shutoff valve and turn it clockwise until it stops. Say it is outside near the meter or inside near the water heater; check both before you need it. Then open a low faucet to drain the lines. If water is near outlets or the panel, stay clear and switch off power only if you can reach the breaker safely and stay dry. Then request an estimate.

Can I pour chemical drain cleaner down a blocked pipe?

It is risky. Say you pour in a strong cleaner and the clog does not move. Now the standing water is full of harsh chemicals, and anyone who works on it has to handle that. These products can also damage some older pipes. A plain plunger is safer for a sink or tub. If that fails, ask a provider about other options.

How long can I wait before getting help?

It depends on what is leaking. Hour one, day two is a good way to think about it. In the first hour, water mostly stays on the surface. By the next morning, it can soak flooring and drywall. By day two, in hot humid weather, damp spots can start growing mold. Clean sewage backups call for faster action than a slow sink drain.

How do I know if my sewer line is damaged?

Look for clues that show up together. Several drains run slowly at once. Odors drift up from floor drains. Patches of lawn turn soggy or sink above the buried line. In areas with big trees and heavy storm rain, roots and shifting soil can crack or clog pipes. A provider can run a camera through the line to see the real problem.

How much does emergency plumbing usually cost?

Prices vary a lot by job. As a rough U.S. guide, clearing a simple drain often runs a couple hundred dollars. Repairing a broken pipe can run higher. Sewer line repair can reach several thousand dollars, depending on depth, length and method. Rates can differ by time of day. Ask each provider for a quote in writing before work starts.

Will my homeowners insurance pay for the damage?

Some policies may cover sudden damage, such as a pipe that bursts without warning. Slow leaks and long-term wear are often treated differently. Read your policy or ask your insurer before you assume anything. Providers can often help document damage for a claim. Take photos before cleanup, and keep your receipts and written quotes in one place.

What happens after I request an estimate?

You describe the problem in a short form. Everywherebid Plumbing then passes it to an independent provider in our network. Many providers can respond quickly, though availability varies. The provider, not Everywherebid Plumbing, does the work and writes your quote. You can say no. If you prefer to talk it through, Request a callback to check provider availability.
